In Their Own Words

The Healing Words Project Dress "The Power of Us" was created through a collaboration between seamstress Ma. Inès Trujillo Chávez and artist Kate Van Doren.
Inès began sewing as a young girl, first making clothing for her dolls. Today she is a dedicated seamstress and mother of three daughters, working full time from her studio where she continues to transform fabric into carefully crafted garments. Documenting Inès in her studio—watching her hands move through a process she has practiced for a lifetime—was an essential part of the creation of this work.
Van Doren and Inès worked together to design the dress, which was sewn entirely by Inès using custom fabric created from imagery from The Healing Words Project. The garment becomes both sculpture and story—an embodiment of collaboration between women, honoring craft, labor, and creative voice.
Presented as part of The Healing Words Project exhibition at the Museo de Arte de Querétaro for International Women’s Month (March–June 2026), the dress celebrates the power of women creating together and the enduring connection between art, storytelling, and shared humanity.
